Description:

Separated from her father and the openhearted Africans who have helped him raise her, young Sara Crewe is sent to boarding school in London. When things go badly for her there, her imaginative powers come to the rescue – helping to transform a drab institution into a place of magic and mystery. As the girl wins the affection of the other boarders, she draws the ire of Miss Minchin, the dour headmistress, who forces Sara to work as a maid when her father is reported dead, and his fortune is seized. Sara counters all of Miss Minchin's best efforts to degrade her, all the while maintaining the grace and virtue of a little princess.

A Little Princess is based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which was honored by School Library Journal as one of the "Top 100 Chapter Books" of all time. This re-imagined version of the classic tale expands beyond the confines of Victorian England to Africa, giving the writers ample opportunity to include lively African music and dance, exotic locales like Mali and Timbuktu and creating an unforgettable journey around the world.

Show Notes:

  • CYT students ages 8-18 who are currently enrolled in a class may audition for this show.
  • An online audition form will be emailed to all students enrolled in a CYT class that selected to participate in auditions. The form will require a bio photo upload, music track upload, and costume measurements in addition to other information.
  • If you are interested in auditioning for either Fall 2022 show, it doesn't matter which show you choose an audition slot under. Please choose only 1 audition slot. You will signify on your audition form you would like to be considered for either show.
  • All auditioning must attend a Vocal Audition and Dance Audition (these are held on 2 separate days).
  • Some who audition may also be requested to attend a Callback (on the same day as the Dance Audition).

VOCAL AUDITIONSHeld on Friday, August 12 starting at 3:30. Location: Oak Hills Church, 1100 Blue Ravine Road, Folsom. Please choose a track with no accompanying vocals (such as a karaoke track). Audition music should be no more than 1 minute. Auditions should be to music (not acapella). The director needs to see how well the student can stay with the music, both in tune and in rhythm. You will be able to upload your music to the audition form. It's best if you have a YouTube link or an actual song file rather than getting a song through iTunes, Spotify or Amazon. We cannot open files through these services.

DANCE AUDITIONSHeld on Saturday, August 13 at 9:00am. Location: Oak Hills Church, 1100 Blue Ravine Road, Folsom. All students who audition must attend the dance audition. Students will learn choreography at home via video and will come ready to perform it for the directors. Parents are welcome to stay and watch the dance audition. Approximate end time is 11:00 am.

CALLBACKS: Held on Saturday, August 13 immediately following the Dance Audition at the same location. CYT callbacks are closed to everyone except the show directors. The directors will call back certain students to sing again, read a scene, dance some more or any combination of these. They will often ask pairs or groups of students to read scenes to see how different combinations of sizes and personalities work together.
If a student is not "called back" it does not mean that they will not be cast in the show.

NOTES:
  • Students who audition are NOT eligible for a class tuition refund regardless of casting.
  • All students cast in the show will be charged a production fee of $175.
  • Families are required to volunteer 20+ hours on a parent team.
