The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. Characters:

Belle

Belle is an intelligent, level-headed young woman. She should appear at least sixteen years old on stage, with a keen emotional intelligence that shows up on her face. Vocally, she should be a mezzo-soprano with a clear, rich tone. Although a spit-fire and certainly fiercely defensive of those she loves and her beliefs, Belle’s most important traits are her mercy and empathy. No accent.

Maurice--Rose Cast (off cast LeFou)

Maurice is Belle’s father, a kind-hearted man and a humble genius. He works hard and, even though he endures ridicule, never abandons his dreams. If he has a fault, it is his alouf nature and the good he sees in people, ignoring their more manipulative traits. This part will likely be played by an actor between the ages of 10-18. No accent.

Maurice--Mirror Cast (off cast LeFou)

Beast

The Beast starts as an arrogant, angry, entitled young man, cursed to remain a hideous beast until the spell is broken. By Belle’s loving hand, he learns to be humble, gentle, and giving, letting go of what he loves most in order to bring her joy and freedom. This role will likely be played by an older actor, ages 14-18. Should not have a problem with volume and showing strong emotions on stage. No accent.

Gaston

Gaston is a conceited, handsome young man who has outgrown and overtaken the small town he lives in. He is the epitome of a large fish in a small pond, but unlike Belle, he is more than happy to remain there, allowing the village to fawn over him. He has his life planned out and he does not care to have those plans challenged. His outward appearance is his greatest concern and who better to complete the picture of prestige and popularity than the village’s most lovely woman-in-need-of-a-husband, Belle. Gaston should have a low singing and speaking voice and not be afraid to show off. He should be an older actor, likely between the ages of 14-18. No accent.

Narrators

The Narrators tell Belle’s story, transforming the tale with their words as well as their actions, changing the set and setting the tone of the scenes before they unfold. This part can be played by an actor of any age 8-18, but needs to exhibit both a clear speaking voice and responsibility. No accent.

Lefou--Rose Cast (off cast Maurice)

Lefou is Gaston’s tag-a-long sidekick, who aspires to be like his compatriot more than anything else. He admires Gaston so much that he would do anything for him. He does not see the way that Gaston mistreats him, but instead happily endures the unkindness and slights directed toward him. Being Gaston’s companion is the only value Lefou places on himself. He works as the comic relief and should have a quick wit and good comedic timing. He also needs a strong, unique tone of voice. This character has potential to grow and change throughout this show. No accent.

Lefou--Mirror Cast (off cast Maurice)

Silly Girls--Rose Cast

The SIlly Girls (3) all adore Gaston. They have a strong dislike of the naturally striking inventor's daughter and do all they can to improve their own outward image. With an abundance of bows, frills, and lipstick, these girls doll themselves up to catch Gaston’s eye and outshine Belle. They should be able to sing and harmonize. These girls should be played by slightly older actors, Likely between the ages of 10-18. No accent.

Silly Girls--Mirror Cast

Lumiere

Lumiere is the footman in the Beast’s castle, magically cursed to remain a candelabra until the spell is broken. He is a smooth-talking, energetic, enthusiastic, bright young man who loves people and is always willing to lend a helping wick. He enjoys plaguing his best friend Cogsworth and gently counseling the Beast. Lumiere is in love with one of the castle’s maids, Babbette. He should have a clear, energetic singing voice. He should be an older actor, likely between the ages of 12-18. French accent.

Cogsworth

Cogsworth is the head butler at the Beast’s castle, magically cursed to remain a clock until the spell is broken. He is constantly wound up, very concerned with rules, and is in general often nervous. Despite his anxiety however, Cogsworth does like to be in charge and often squabbles with his companion Lumiere in order to be so. He should be an older actor, likely between the ages of 12-18. British accent.

Mrs Potts

Mrs. Potts is the head housemaid in the castle, magically cursed to remain a teapot until the spell is broken. She is bright and bubbly, loving and motherly. She should have a rich singing tone and gentle countenance. She is a literal mother to Chip, one of the teacups in the castle, and figurative mother to everyone else, including the Beast. This character needs to be able to convey emotion extremely well through facial expressions. She should be an older actor, likely between the ages of 14-18. British accent.

Babette--Rose Cast

Babette is a giggly, lovely young maid in the Beast’s castle, cursed to remain a feather duster until the spell is broken. She is excited to watch the love story between Belle and Beast unfold and also enjoy her own, as she falls in love with the Castle’s flaming footman. She should be an older actor, likely between the ages of 12-18. French accent.

Babette--Mirror Cast

Madame De La Grande Bouche

Madam De La Grande Bouche is an opera singer and fashion-enthusiast, working as entertainment to the Castle before she was cursed to remain a wardrobe until the spell is broken. She should have a high soprano range with strong operatic notes. This character also works as some comedic relief and should not be afraid of a large costume. She should be an older actor, likely between the ages of 12-18. No accent.

Chip--Rose Cast (Offcast Whisk in Blue Team (Castle Servants))

Chip is a young boy (or possibly girl) in the castle, the son of Mrs. Potts, who is cursed to remain a teacup until the spell is broken. Chip is happy and energetic and makes the best of his circumstances. He is curious and loves to laugh! Should be great at telling a story through facial expressions. He should be a younger actor, appearing 8 or so on stage. No accent.

Chip--Mirror Cast (Offcast Whisk in Blue Team (Castle Servants))

Old Beggar Woman/Enchantress

The Enchantress is a mysterious woman who disguises herself as an old beggar. She is the one who sets the tone for the theme of the show-- that the way you look should not dictate the way you are treated. She tries to teach Beast this lesson by cursing him and his castle. This part should be played by an actor who can appear mature on stage, likely 12-18. No accent.

Monsieur D'Arque

Monsieur D’arque is the owner of an asylum and manipulates people for money. His main concern is growing rich and he has little to no regard for people in general. Likely an actor 12-18. Slight British accent

Gold Team (Specialty Dancers - In Gaston and Be our Guest (napkins)) (4)

Blue Team--Castle Servants (Candlestick-TAP)

The Servants in the Beast’s castle are anything from whisks to floor rugs and all hopefully await the day the spell is broken! They happily embrace Belle’s arrival and do all they can to welcome her. They love to sing and dance. These actors can be of any age 8-18, but should be willing to work hard with facial expressions, singing (maybe some harmonies), and dance.
