There's no place like home!  So come on home to CYT and we'll travel together on a whimsical journey to the Merry Old Land of Oz! In this beloved literary piece, Dorothy, a lonely Kansas farm girl, travels Over the Rainbow to discover the magical power of home. Follow the Yellow Brick Road with Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Lion in this stage adaptation of everyone's favorite iconic film classic!

Ticket holders can trade tickets with other ticket holders. If tickets are sold or traded, please transfer the PDF or paper copy of the ticket. If any dispute arises over seats at a show, or somehow duplicate tickets are presented for the same seat, CYT will consider only the original purchaser of the tickets in the CYT database to be the owner of the seats.

Show Notes:

  • CYT students ages 8-18 who are currently enrolled in a class may audition for this show. 
  • An online audition form will be emailed to all students enrolled in a CYT class that selected to participate in auditions. The form will require a bio photo upload, music track upload, and costume measurements in addition to other information. 
  • All auditioning must attend a Vocal Audition and Dance Audition (these are held on 2 separate days). 
  • Some who audition may also be requested to attend a Callback (on the same day as the Dance Audition). 

VOCAL AUDITIONS: Held on Thursday, Feb. 25 starting at 4:30 at Valley Springs Church, 2401 Olympus Drive, Roseville. Please choose a track with no accompanying vocals (such as a karaoke track). Audition music should be no more than 1 minute. Auditions should be to music (not acapella). You will be able to upload your music to the audition form. It's best if you have a YouTube link or an actual song file rather than getting a song through iTunes, Spotify or Amazon. We cannot open files through these services. You may also have a friend or family member who plays piano or guitar accompany you. There will be a piano available at auditions. The director needs to see how well the student can stay with the music, both in tune and in rhythm.

DANCE AUDITIONS: Held on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 9:00am at Valley Springs Church, 2401 Olympus Drive, Roseville. All students who audition must attend the dance audition. Students will be taught a dance(s) from the show, and then be asked to perform it for the directors. Parents are welcome to stay and watch the dance audition. Approximate end time is 11:00 am.

CALLBACKS: Held on Saturday, Feb. 27 immediately following the Dance Audition. CYT callbacks are closed to everyone except the show directors. The directors will call back certain students to sing again, read a scene, dance some more or any combination of these. They will often ask pairs or groups of students to read scenes to see how different combinations of sizes and personalities work together. 
Just because a student is not "called back" does not mean that they will not be cast in the show.

NOTES: 
  • Students who audition are NOT eligible for a class tuition refund regardless of casting. 
  • All students cast in the show will be charged a production fee of $175.
  • Families are required to volunteer 20+ hours on a parent team.

Characters:

Dorothy Gale

Sweet, innocent young lady with a streak of boldness, outspoken, and headstrong, but dearly loves family, friends, and her dog, Toto. Lives on farm with Aunt Em & Uncle Henry but dreams of escaping to a far-off place where she will not get into trouble. *Must be a committed actor, strong vocalist, good dancer.

Toto

Dorothy’s beloved dog. Must be very calm and able to bark with expression ;)

Aunt Em

Hard-working farmer’s wife who is firm & no-nonsense but also warm and caring. Sings reprise of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” as duet with Dorothy. Mainly an acting role requiring ability to show both strong and softer sides.

Uncle Henry

Dorothy’s adoring uncle and farm owner but lets his wife Em stay in charge. Non-singing role, and requires a good character actor.

Hunk (Scarecrow)

Clumsy, one of three farmhands on Dorothy’s farm. Both characters talk about being smart and having a brain. Requires excellent body control, strong vocals, and good rhythm.

Hickory (Tin Man)

Kind, sweet, and nurturing. One of three farmhands. Tin Man has no heart but is very caring. Requires good physical control, pleasant singing voice.

Zeke (Cowardly Lion)

Third farmhand who lacks courage. Acts tough but true fearful self comes out in any scary situation. Requires strong comedic timing, strong character voice, and physical control.

Miss Gulch (Wicked Witch of the West)

Cold-hearted neighbor who hates Toto. The non-singing role requires intense dramatic commitment, strong stage presence, vocal control, and ability to succeed with classic witch’s cackle.

Professor Marvel (The Wizard)

Traveling salesman who lives by telling fortunes. A bit of a con man but with a good heart. This non-singing role requires versatility to demonstrate a strong & commanding Wizard yet show the soft & caring side. Also requires memorization of large chunks of dialogue.

Glinda

Good Witch of the North who is the mother figure for Munchkins and Dorothy whom she guides through Oz. Delicate and graceful, the role requires a lovely singing voice and sweet speaking tone.

Cyclone Dancers

They will help create the tornado effect through interpretive dance and moving scenery. Non-singing roles require ability to correctly complete a variety of dance turns & leaps.

Munchkins

Little people who live in Munchkinland where Dorothy’s house lands. Full of joy, enthusiasm, and celebration. All sizes eligible. Group singing and reacting.

Doorman

Comical character in Emerald City. Doorman tries to be tough but turns into a “softy.”

Guard

Comical character in Emerald City. Guard changes from harsh to sympathetic because Dorothy cries.

Ozians

Citizens of Emerald City, group singing and dancing.

Winged Monkeys

Wicked Witch’s menacing animal army. Non-singing, non-speaking but plenty of monkey business and sounds! Requires posture control and very high energy.

Nikko

Leader of the Winged Monkeys. Non-singing.

Winkie Guards

Wicked Witch’s slave-guards who are over-joyed at her death. Must have physical control to demonstrate crisp military movements.

Winkie Leader

Leader of the Winkie Guards. Small speaking part, no vocal solo.
