Description:

More than being a show about a girl and her dragon-slaying prince, this story happens at the junction of multiple character arcs. A king trying to protect what he loves the most, a mother struggling to let the little girl she has protected become her own woman, a girl in the woods grappling with opposing futures, a prince determined to break free of a predetermined destiny, a group of outcasts reaching for a place to belong, and a jealous fairy weaving a story of fear to gain power and control at all costs - each one hoping that the "someday" they long for could be today… Will any of them have the courage to step out of the life fear has scripted for them?
“Oh to have a world without fear. Now that would be quite a world.”

Show Notes:

  • CYT students ages 8-18 who are currently enrolled in a class in Roseville may audition for this show.
    • SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT WANTING TO AUDITION FOR BOTH FALL SHOWS: Show auditions for both our Roseville and Folsom locations will be COMBINED. If you have interest in both show titles and are willing to be cast in EITHER show, you can indicate that on the audition form which will be emailed to you after audition registration. In this case, when registering to audition, please only sign up for an audition slot for the show in the same area as the class in which you are registering. (Please note: If you select "EITHER SHOW" on your audition form, you will only be cast in one show, to be determined by the directors.)
  • An online audition form will be emailed to all students enrolled in a CYT class who have registered to audition. Please be prepared with the following items needed for your form:
    • headshot (does not need to be professional)
    • audition music track upload link
    • flexible measuring tape to provide some basic costume measurements

VOCAL & PRELIMINARY DANCE AUDITIONS:
Friday, Aug. 14 @ Radiant Church (7801 Hazel Ave. - Orangevale)
  • Students will sign up for a 20 min. group audition time slot.
  • Please choose an accompaniment track with no vocals (such as a karaoke track - no a cappella audition songs).
    • The audition song cut should be no more than 1 minute. The director needs to see how well the student can stay with the music, both in tune and in rhythm. You will be able to upload your music to the audition form. It's best if you have a YouTube link or a song file. We cannot access tracks through iTunes, Spotify or Amazon.
  • For the dance portion, students will learn choreography at home via video (sent out 1 week prior to auditions) and will come ready to perform it for the directors following their vocal audition. This is performed in a group with the other auditioners in the same time slot.

CALLBACKS: (including Featured Dancers)
Saturday, Aug. 15 - 9am  @ Radiant Church (7801 Hazel Ave. - Orangevale)
  • The purpose of Callbacks is for the directors to see certain students dance additional choreography, sing a selection from the show, read a scene, or any combination of these.
  • Directors may ask pairs or groups of students to read scenes to see how different combinations of acting style, ages, and heights work together.
  • CYT callbacks are CLOSED to everyone except the artistic team.
  • If a student is not called back, it DOES NOT mean that they will not be cast in the show.
PLEASE NOTE:
  • Students who audition are NOT eligible for a class tuition refund, regardless of casting.
  • All students cast in the show will be charged a production fee of $250
  • All families are required to serve on a parent team and should expect to serve a MINIMUM OF 30 HOURS.

Characters:

Princess Aurora/Briar Rose

Definitely not a wilting flower. Strong, feisty, adventurous, kind, gracious, desperate to live life, and ready to take on the challenge.

Prince Perrault

Not just the anonymous prince who comes to save the day. Kind, dutiful, conflicted, desperate to be known for who he is, not his position as prince.

Hellisent

One of the fairies, but years of jealousy and self-pity leave her obsessed with control and power. A little ridiculous and self-absorbed, acting more important than she maybe is.

King Henry

Kind & benevolent & generous, a beloved ruler. Loves his family & his kingdom. Relinquishes relationships & life to fear and control.

Queen Catherine

Kind & loving & benevolent, a beloved ruler. Loves King Henry & her daughter. Worries & over-protects Aurora.

Fairy Willow

Magical fairy of Australis & Fairy Godmother to Aurora. Kind of a rascally sprite, she is always sticking her foot in her mouth, saying the wrong thing. Lovable & impetuous. Lost her wings standing up to Hellisent; kind of a rogue fairy.

Fairy Tulip

Magical fairy of Borealis, Fairy Godmother to Prince Perrault & Aurora. Strong, thoughtful, one of the wiser the fairies. Not afraid to face a challenge. Wise, brave veteran.

Skarp

Leader of the Ravens, Hellisent’s right-hand. Conscripted to Hellisent’s service, serving her every whim, but actually a little smarter than her (he’s quick & sharp). Concerned for his Ravens.

Master of Ceremonies

Top palace staff official. A bit of a perfectionist, loves to keep things on track and do things by tradition. Takes pride in his work and the overall function and look of the palace. A little high-strung and semi-obsessed with drapes.

Mrs. Wells

Head Housekeeper, no nonsense, knows where everything is & keeps everyone going.

Maria

Head maid, a little bit sassy

Chef

Nobody bakes a wedding cake like this guy.

Jean

Works with the chef; French.

Courtiers

Nobles, advisors, companions, attendants who live in the Palace.

Palace Staff

Servants and workers within the Palace. Love their king & queen, waiting for the day the Lost Princess returns & life can begin again.

Fairies

Sweetpea, Iris, Lavender, Daisy, Lily

Raven Spies

Punk-pirate-steampunk street thugs who can fly. They represent a sub-culture within the land of Australis, seen with suspicion and fear. Bit of a rowdy crowd. Manipulated by Hellisent into her service, spreading fear and doubt in the land.

Shadows

Bring all of Hellisent’s magic to life, embodying tattered dreams, whispers of fear, lament, and regret (not scary).

Sunrise Dancers

Featured Dancers group, representing hope, woven in and out of the story showing a little light in an otherwise hopeless night. On occasion, embody Fairy Tulip & Fairy Willow’s magic.
