Class Description

The Fundamentals of Directing class will provide students with the basic directing techniques needed to direct a musical or a play.  Students will explore composition, terminology and the ethics of good stage directing.  Learn to recognize the various theatrical styles and their influence on directing choices as well as focus on how to break down a script using units, action and energy cycles.  


Prerequisite: Students must have participated in at least 2 CYT shows, or 3 class sessions or other equivalent training/performance experience, or receive special permission by the instructor to enroll.


Kevin Johnson

Kevin Johnson Kevin Johnson is an actor, singer, dancer, director and visual artist. His visual art is signed “KJohnson”. He has worked as an actor for 40 years and a graduate from the University of Evansville. He has worked with IRT, the Phoenix Theatre, Edyvean Theatre, Indianapolis Civic Theatre, Soul People Repertory Theatre, Actors’ Inc., San Francisco Mime Troupe, Intersection of the Arts in San Francisco, Indianapolis Opera Company, Footlite Musicals, where he won an encore award for the musical “Grand Hotel”. He toured Europe with the Chorale Ayers while studying in England. He has worked Summer-stock Theatres with Cross- Roads Repertory Theatre in Terre Haute, The Weathervane Theatre in Whitefield, New Hampshire, and Memphis Black Rep in Memphis, TN. He has also worked in film and TV. Though he lived ten years in San Francisco he has returned to Indianapolis, his home town, to care for his mother, who has now passed on. He is thankful for the time he had with her. He is the son of the late- Alonzo “Pookie” Johnson an Indianapolis Jazz Legend. He had a feature character role in the Movie film Short: “A Song for Jade” which won awards in San Francisco, Oakland and the Los Angeles Black Film Awards. Since his return to Indianapolis, He has worked with Asante Children’s Theatre, Freetown Village, Spotlight Players, Indy Bard, No Exit Productions, Phoenix Theatre, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Philip Watt Productions, and the San Francisco Mime Troupe to name a few. He also has 2 commercials playing one for L.S. Ayres at the Indiana History Society where he is an employee for the Cole Porter Room and the Healing Bodies, Changing Minds exhibit. He also has a commercial running for the St. Vincents Cancer Care.


Kylie Raby

Kylie (Ehlert) Raby was one of the two students in CYT Sacramento’s first graduating class in 2013. Since then, she had taught at two summer camps, helped choreograph for Charlie Brown and Little Mermaid Jr., and taught the Stomp! class in Spring of 2015. More recently, Mrs. Raby has become the Camp Coordinator for the past two Summer Camps and has Stage Managed Into the Woods (Fall 2017) and Mary Poppins Jr. (Spring 2018), as well as taught Wiggles/Our Gang in Auburn, a Makeup Class, and a kids stomp class. She graduated in May 2017 with a BA in Music Education from Fresno Pacific University, with an emphasis in Percussion and Conducting. Recently married, Mrs. Raby moved back into town and is now living in Citrus Heights with her new husband. She has been working on her credential and a Masters of Arts in Education through Alliant University (online) and hopes to be the Director of Bands at a high school. Her passion is to educate students in music, and hopes to pursue this in both band and theater.
