Class Description

Theater is a visual medium that begins with an invisible vision. What are the steps from what a director wants to what an audience sees on the stage? In this class you’ll learn to design a show that pulls the audience into a story, starting with a cohesive visual setting. Students will examine the director’s creative process to give a show a cohesive look using color, texture, dimension, and character. Learn to create an artistic vision, communicate your vision to a team, and bring that vision to life!

Gillian Smit

Gillian Smit is excited to bring her passion for theatre and experience in theatrical design to CYT Sacramento. While studying English and journalism at Long Beach State, she took a step back from performance and poured her creativity into designing and creating sets, props, and costumes. A former CYT student, Gillian has assisted with “backstage” classes and continues to work on the sets and props team in Roseville. If you can’t find her at rehearsal, she is probably off somewhere tinkering with tricky props, faux painting boxes, or climbing a fake tree to dress the set.
