Gillian Smit is excited to bring her passion for theatre and experience in theatrical design to CYT Sacramento. While studying English and journalism at Long Beach State, she took a step back from performance and poured her creativity into designing and creating sets, props, and costumes. A former CYT student, Gillian has assisted with “backstage” classes and continues to work on the sets and props team in Roseville. If you can’t find her at rehearsal, she is probably off somewhere tinkering with tricky props, faux painting boxes, or climbing a fake tree to dress the set.
Kelly Benjamson hales from Southern California where she grew up singing in the church choir. She has her Masters in Music from Cal State Long Beach and has traveled all over the world singing, her favorite trip being a six-week mission chorale tour throughout Asia. She sang professionally with Opera Pacific Chorus, Pacific Chorale, and has performed throughout California. Kelly’s love for music and kids collided in her first job teaching inner city kids in Los Angeles. Since then she has taught all levels of singing privately and in groups, as well as in school settings. She recently directed the Kids Christmas Showcase at Bayside Adventure with 100 kids! Kelly has directed church choirs, bell choirs, musicals, showcases, worship teams, and the list goes on. After being in Sacramento for two plus years, her voice student invited her to a CYT performance. She is thrilled to be teaching for such a great organization.
Trey is a former professional dancer that used to be based in Pittsburgh and New York City before he started his career in ministry. Trey grew up in the Roseville area and received his dance training from NCDC (Northern California Dance Conservatory). Through NCDC, Trey had the opportunity to work with many East Coast companies such as Joffrey Ballet, Complexions Ballet, and New York City Ballet. Trey attended Point Park University in Pittsburgh to complete his BFA in Dance while simultaneously performing as a Vacation Swing on Broadway in ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE. Trey was then called by God to pursue a career in Youth Ministry and now attends William Jessup University, finishing up his Bachelors in Youth Ministry. Trey still incorporates his artistic talents into his work in ministry as a teacher at both Ballet Rejoice and CYT. Trey passionately serves at his home church at Metro Calvary and is also a part-time coordinator at the Rock of Roseville for the 5th/6th grade ministry. Trey’s desire as a disciple of God is to foster the talents in youth, instill passion in them, and help them grow through their talents in the way that God is calling them to.
CYT alumni, Tanner Nolan Coppernoll, is ecstatic to fulfill a position in teaching students of all ages his knowledge of the arts. Called to be a pastor from the Lord, he feels as if he is receiving a head start in beginning his ministry when working at CYT. Tanner has done eight major performances in his life. Pertaining to those performances, his favorite roles have been Tommy Djlas (CYT’s “Music Man”), Perchik (CYT’s “Fiddler on the Roof”), and Johnathan Northbrook (CYT’s “Mary Poppins Jr.”). Tanner has always been involved with visual arts, singing, and some times dancing (in his home kitchen, that is). High school sparked the interest of the arts in Tanner’s life. It was there where he would take on two years of drama and choir classes, speech, two years of yearbook, and six musicals. In his second year at Sierra College, majoring in Photography has blessed him with many opportunities to take arts classes (such as: Poetry, History of Music, History of Theatre, and Photography). He now successfully owns his very own business, “Vision Photography”, displaying the love of Christ through the gift of visual arts God blessed him with. Alongside his business, God has placed him in the ministry where he fulfills the position of a high school counselor at First Baptist Church of Auburn (where he runs the social media, leads bible studies, and does worship). Tanner plans to focus on the character of students' hearts, teach visual concepts in a unique way, and how that interconnects with theatre and art as a whole. His concept of teaching will always be Christ-centered and wants to glorify Him through all of the classes he teaches.
